Twitiquette: Reasons I Will Unfollow You

Twitter has been around long enough now for us to have some unwritten rules and pet peeves. I definitely have mine. Here are reasons why I unfollow people on Twitter:

  1. Hogging the stream: If you are at an event, set up a separate account for updates. Don't send a tweet quoting a keynote speech every 30 seconds and fill up my tweet stream. If you have something that takes more than two tweets, write a blog post. I only have so much screenspace.
  2. People who over-market: I don't mind people occasionally bragging about their businesses or posting a link to a blog post, but I don't want to be constantly marketed to. If that's what you want to do, set up your account as a business and let me decide if I'm interested enough to follow. This goes for celebrities as well.
  3. People who post their private conversations: If tweets turn into more than one or two replies, then direct message the rest and keep me out of it. I'm not interested in a detailed lunch-place decision-making process.
  4. Gutter-nonsense: I have a pretty high threshold for dirt, but even I draw a line at graphic descriptions of your bowel movement or sex life. C'mon, people. Just because you CAN write it, doesn't mean you should.

That's about it. Some people have pet-peeves about people who reply or don't reply to them, who follows or unfollows them. I don't get hung up on that. I just want to conntect to interesting people. Period.
